Researchers in the Danelle O. Cayea Lab develop and evaluate curriculum that teaches the care of older adults to residents and medical students. Our work includes older adults with complex heath issues who receive care in hospital and ambulatory environments.

The Nancy Codori Lab is interested in doctors and suicide, depression in medical students and the improvement of health care providers’ history-taking skills.

The Natasha Chida Lab investigates methods for using education and curriculum development to improve patient outcomes worldwide, primarily by optimizing education of physicians-in-training. Most recently, our team has worked to develop and evaluate an assessment tool for evaluating internal medicine residents’ understanding of tuberculosis diagnostics. Previous research includes a retrospective cohort study on the high proportion of extrapulmonary TB in a low-prevalence setting as well as an analysis of ways to define clinical excellence in adult infectious disease practice.

The Marie Hanna Lab conducts research on key topics within the field of anesthesiology. Our interests include both regional and obstetric anesthesia as well as patient-controlled analgesia, pain measurement, post-operative pain and acute pain management. Examples of our work include researching whether a surgery patient’s perception of pain control affects his or her satisfaction level and a comparison of air and liquid for use in the loss-of-resistance technique during labor epidurals.

The Timothy Niessen Lab studies patient outcomes in the ICU. We are particularly interested in the effects of sleep quality, delirium transitions and sedation on the improvement of intensive care patients. Our investigators also focus on the practices of internal medicine interns, studying the variability of hand washing hygiene, etiquette-based communication and time spent in direct and indirect patient care. We have also studied the onset of myelopathy as a result of B12 deficiency from long-term colchicine treatment and recreational nitrous oxide use.

The Rachel Levine Lab is interested in physician growth and well-being, best practices for advising medical students, and the experiences of women faculty and medical students in medicine.

The Samuel Durso Lab researches effective education models for preparing the next generation of geriatric educators. Specifically, we have developed and evaluated the ""Train the Trainer"" program to prepare faculty to teach geriatric medicine.

Research in the Joseph Carrese Lab focuses on clinical ethics and professionalism, with a particular interest in medical education and examining ethical issues in the context of cultural diversity. We collaborate with colleagues to design, implement and evaluate educational curricula addressing ethics and professionalism issues in clinical practice.

The Charles Wiener Lab primarily conducts research on pulmonary circulation and hypoxia as well as respiratory muscle function in patients with neuromuscular diseases. Our recent studies have included investigating the treatment of pericardial effusions in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension and examining the use of non-invasive ventilation in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We also have an interest in medical education research. Our work in this area has included reviewing the role of academic medical centers in emerging health care markets.
